Natural Dyeing Mordants and Modifiers

Achieve long-lasting, vibrant colours with our selection of natural dye mordants and modifiers, including Alum Potassium Sulphate, Alum Acetate, Calcium Carbonate (Chalk), Soda Ash, and Citric Acid.

Mordanting your fabrics and fibres is a crucial step in natural dyeing, ensuring colours are long-lasting. Here are the high-quality mordants and modifiers we use in our practices:

Aluminium Potassium Sulphate (Alum)
Our alum is free of heavy metals and perfect for mordanting fibres and fabrics. Commonly used with protein fibres, it can also be combined with a tannin to mordant cellulose (plant) fibres. Alum comes in crystal form and dissolves in hot water, ensuring a smooth dyeing process. Available in 15g, 50g or 100g resealable bags.

Aluminium Acetate
Our fine powder Aluminium Acetate is ideal for mordanting cellulose fibres. It is often used in a two-step process with Calcium Carbonate (Chalk), which you can find [here]. This versatile mordant can also be used alone or with tannin. Dissolving easily in hot water, we recommend using gloves and a face mask when handling the powder. Available in 15g, 50g or 100g resealable bags.

Soda Ash

Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate or washing soda, is used to scour cellulose fibres (plant fibres) for natural dyeing. It can also be used as an alkaline post-modifier and as an alkaline in an indigo or woad vat. Soda ash dissolves in hot water and it is advised to wear a face mask and gloves when using fine powders. Available in 15g, 50g or 100g resealable bags.

Calcium Carbonate (Chalk)

Calcium carbonate, also known as chalk. Commonly used to help harden water when dyeing with plant dyes such as madder. Also used in a 2-step process when mordanting plant fibres (cellulose) in conjunction with aluminium acetate (available here - link). Available in 15g, 50g or 100g resealable bags.

Citric Acid

Enhance your natural dyeing experience with our high-quality Citric Acid! This versatile modifier is perfect for adjusting hues, allowing you to shift reds to vibrant oranges and purples to soft pinks.

Product Details:

  • Usage: Simply dissolve in hot water, using around 5% WOF (Weight of Fibre), but we recommend testing to achieve your desired results.

  • Benefits: A must-have for any dyer looking to explore and expand their colour palette naturally!
